CHEMTREC® Enlists Spill Center®
for 24-Hour Spill Cleanup Referrals
ACTON, MASS— The Spill Center®, an environmental claims
management company that specializes in coordinating over-the-
road hazardous materials spill cleanup and reporting, has been
selected by the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) to
provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week cleanup contractor referrals
and assistance with incidents involving haz-mat releases.
Organized in 1990, the Spill Center provides subscribers with
customized spill contingency plans, regulatory reporting and
compliance documentation, in addition to monitoring and auditing
of cleanup activities related to environmental releases of diesel fuel
and other hazardous materials.
Services are designed to limit the liability of transporters and help
control their costs resulting from spills, according to Spill Center
president Tom Moses, an environmental attorney and former
toxicologist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The CMA's Chemical Transportation Emergency Center
(CHEMTREC®), Arlington, Va., is recognized worldwide as a
primary resource for fast, reliable technical information about
hazardous materials found in the transportation industry. First
responders to hazmat spills, typically police and fire department
personnel, contact CHEMTREC to determine proper handling
precautions.
Under the agreement, the Spill Center will provide cleanup
contractor names, phone numbers and other information to
CHEMTREC staff, CHEMTREC registrants, and fire and
police departments, Moses noted. The Spill Center maintains a
comprehensive database of cleanup contractors throughout the
U.S. and Canada at its headquarters in Acton, Mass. In addition,
current federal, state and local reporting requirements and
contacts are maintained by the Spill Center to assist its own
subscribers, as well as CHEMTREC registrants. The Spill Center
serves private fleets, for-hire carriers, truck leasing companies,
and chemical and insurance companies.
Group Registration Program
A CHEMTREC®-Spill Center® Group Registration Program is
also available. It effectively doubles a transporter's resources for
handling any release, whenever and wherever it happens, noted
Moses. He explained that after a spill, a single call to CHEM-
TREC activates the transporter's custom Spill Center contingency
plan and provides access to chemical information to advise
emergency responders. Spill Center experts handle reporting,
cleanup contractor referrals, compliance documentation, and
auditing of invoices to limit the transporter's costs and liability
24
hours a day, 7 days a week, he added.
